I Love Type

So the lovely people at Viction:ary contacted me about 4 months ago saying that they would like to feature my work in a series of books they were publishing all about type. The book is about the typeface Avant Garde and the second book of the series. Here are a couple of photos of my work inside the book, which they kindly sent me a copy of over Christmas.

Of late I have neglected my Blog somewhat, so it seems fitting that on all hallows eve I resurrect the beast.

Recently, since July, I have been working for a company in Manchester called Drumbeat. I am really enjoying working in the industry and even more so at Drumbeat. Of the few places I have worked Drumbeat is the one that I have felt more at home, the atmosphere is brilliant and the people are more like a family that just colleagues.

In other news I got my results from University and passed with a 2:1. The certificate I received was pretty poor as far as print standards go, it was not full bleed or litho and to quote my friend Victor "looked like someones mum had made it on Word." Another cut back of the University of Cumbria!

I shall not leave it so long before my next post as hopefully next time I got to Magma I will be coming back with something to show you all!

This is a logo I have designed for my brothers sculpture project, which is a huge machine that makes coffee designed in a very 'steam punks' way. The design and concept of the machine is that it is sticking a finger up to the corporate giants of the coffee industry and a cry for fair trade. It will eventually be etched onto the machine.

This is a book about the existence of black holes in the universe and how they prove the theory that all modern science is based upon wrong. I spent a lot of time at the beginning of the year working on this project and getting nowhere and in the last week I have managed to create something I am truly proud of, just shows how much you can improve in a short period of time.

Robots of Science Fiction

This is a logo I designed for an exhibition about classic science fiction robots and analogue special effects. I wanted to make the logo look as though it was made out of loads of scraps and spare parts just like the old sci-fi robots were. I wanted it to look quite fun and get the feel of the exhibition across. There are a few things that need tweaking but it is almost there I feel.

So I did this poster for concrete this morning and it took me less than half an hour, mainly because I was in a rush and needed to email it yesterday, and secondly because it is influenced heavily by a piece I saw on fffffound the other day. This made me think about the argument that good designers borrow great designers steal. If this is the case it seems awfully wrong. However if something is good is it wrong to be inspired by it?

Global Warming At Its Best

Well basically it is snowing and my house looks pretty nice so here are some pictures of it.
I have really enjoyed living at home these last few weeks of holiday its been a really enjoyable break, not having to worry about running out of food, not having to deal with god knows how many piles of washing up, being able to have baths and being warmed by the fire.

Not many of you will know but I was heavily involved with the building of this house, my farther and I spent 2 years getting it ready to live in (obviously within building regulations certain things have to be done by a trained professional, so by no means am I trying to say we did it all, just a very large amount) and getting it to be as environmentally friendly as possible. It was originally a 17th century farm house which occupied most of the land around Charnock Richard (the village I live in) but in 2005 it was in a very bad state and needed the foundations underpinning, so instead of spend loads of money underpinning it and risk it falling foul later in life, we decided to dismantle it completely and build it with stronger materials, but keeping all the old bricks and wooden beams for use in the interior of the house. The house is almost sustainable, and uses very little power from the grid or water from the mains, it uses a rain harvest collection tank (the size of a double decker bus) buried in the garden to collect water to be used for all the non-drinking appliances such as toilets, washing machine, outside taps ect. Given that the old farm house that used to be here had walls 2 foot thick, even internally, the rebuild with mordern materials gave us much more room inside and we have managed to fit on 3 floors, 6 bed rooms, 4 bathrooms, 3 living rooms, study, kitchen, utility and conservatory, yet with the modern eco' materials it hardly uses any power to heat all these.

So anyway its snowing and all that…

I have to confess i am a little bit of a sci-fi geek, well a lot actually. The one thing I have noticed about sci-fi thrillers is that you always have this amazing monster that is scientifically or evolutionarily superior but you know nothing about how they have evoled, where they got the technology from,why (if) they are attacking or more importantly what their home life is like.
So I have decided to make a series of posters for the charity M.W.B (monsters with bio's).

So I have been asked to design a poster for a new night starting in party party, featuring live music. As I had never been in the place itself i thought it would be a good idea to go, which turned out to be a mistake as it is seriously not the kind of place I would normally go.

Magazine Design

This brief I was asked to create a magazine front cover, contents page and a two page article. I had to come up with the size of the magazine and then make a grid for it. I chose to make my magazine the same height as creative review but the height of dazed and confused, as this would be a nice manageable size. The colour coding at the top of each page would make it easier for people to navigate to a certain article or section of the magazine.

The brief was to illustrate how you spent the Christmas holiday only using type and words you heard or found. I chose to create my own version of the 12 days of Christmas, using things that happened to me over the holiday. There were no restrictions on the brief so I decided that I would create a book to display my words, and in this I would only use one type face, Helvetica neuve, and 3 colours.

The brief for this project was to create an interesting way of promoting Mushrooms. After having thoroughly researched into mushrooms and learning a few interesting facts I decided to take the project down a comic route. The fact that I found the most interesting was that out of all the 14,000 species only 5% are actually edible, but only 1% will kill you. Taking this fact I decided to make a comic advertisement for mushrooms that you wouldn't see in Tescos.
